Aware that strangers often make fun of her, Haley Morris-Cafiero created a series of self-portraits shot in public in which people in the background are laughing, pointing, or staring. I heard about her work through this article. Here is how I interpret her project: she transformed painful scenarios into art. She made herself vulnerable. And she is definitely stimulating a dialogue about weight (check out the comments).
